Career Building

Events like our Graduate School Panel and Professors Talk Series aimed to enhance the awareness of students about career paths and allow them networking opportunities. At the former event UES hosted a panel of graduate students from the Economics program at UCLA to explore post-graduation paths and how to best prepare for graduate school. For the latter program, UES brought together faculty and students in a series where professors could speak on their particular interests in the field and they could engage students in discussion.

Fostering Discourse

UES Reading Groups were created as a space for students to regularly gather to discuss emerging academic papers in the field of economics. While this is a common practice for graduate students, UES opened it up to all students to enhance students’ skills of critical reading and analyzing academic papers. Weekly presentations also encouraged students to develop skills in public speaking and presentation. Most importantly, UES Reading Group served as a unique opportunity to engage with peers in thoughtful discourse on their topic of study.

Tutoring

Student volunteers from the UES who had completed courses in the Economics major volunteered to tutor their peers in a number of courses. During set tutoring hours, these students would make themselves available to answer questions and aid students in studying for their midterms and finals. The students helped with the required courses for Economics including Econ 11, 41, 101, 102, and 103.
